Bacterial Cell Wall: Thinking Globally, Actin Locally
نویسندگان
چکیده
The bacterial actin-like protein MreB is thought to form a continuous helical polymer at the membrane to confer rod shape. Two new studies now show that MreB forms discrete dynamic patches that travel circumferentially.

Actin cytoskeleton: Thinking globally, actin’ locally
A class of proteins dubbed pipmodulins bind to and sequester the phospholipid PIP2 in the plasma membrane. Local release of PIP2 controls actin dynamics in specific subcellular regions and plays a critical role in regulating actin-based cell motility and morphogenesis.
متن کاملBacterial Shape: Growing off this Mortal Coil
Members of the actin-like MreB family of proteins localize as a helical filament in bacteria and are important for determining cylindrical cell shape. Recent results show that new cell wall biosynthesis occurs along a helical track dependent on one of these actin homologs, providing new insights into bacterial cell growth, division and shape.
متن کاملActing Globally while Thinking Locally: Is the Global Environment Protected by Transport Emission Control Programs?
Locally motivated air quality programs have only minor collateral benefits for the global climate. If agencies with global and local agendas did business together, then individuals and firms — and even cities — would act globally when thinking locally, and one would see greater synergy.

M icrobial shape, long used as a taxonomic criterion, is genetically determined. But how DNA sequence information is translated into morphology is a seminal question still without a complete answer for any microorganism. Recently, however, when investigators discovered that actin-like proteins are involved in determining bacterial cell shape, they revolutionized the field. This insight provides...
